Online piano lessons are a convenient and effective way to learn piano or take your skills to the next level. Here is a short list of what you need to take advantage of live online piano lessons:
A piano or keyboard: You can use either a piano or a keyboard when you take online piano lessons. If you don’t yet have one, your online piano teacher can suggest some good options.
A computer, tablet, or smartphone: You’ll need a device that will allow you and your online piano teacher to see and hear each other clearly. A larger screen, like that on a tablet or laptop, works best since you can see your online piano teacher’s hands more clearly, but you can also do online piano lessons with just a smartphone.
An internet connection: A reliable internet connection will ensure that your online piano lessons go smoothly with minimal disruption. Most basic internet plans have sufficient bandwidth to handle video calls.
Microphone and speakers: Most computers, tablets, and smartphones have these built in, but it’s a good idea to test them in a video call to make sure the sound comes through clearly. If there is a lot of external noise where you will be taking your online piano lessons, you may want to use a pair of headphones so you and your online piano teacher can hear each other easily.
Webcam: If you use a computer, it will need a working webcam so your online piano teacher can see you as you play. While most modern computers have a built-in camera, you might consider using an external webcam so you can position it easily for your online piano lessons.
A piano bench: A good piano bench allows you to sit comfortably and with good posture as you play the piano. It’s important that you sit at the proper height to keep your hands and arms free of tension as you play, so consider using an adjustable piano bench. If you’re not ready to buy a piano bench, a chair will also work, as long as it does not restrict your arm movement. If you are using a keyboard, you can even choose to play standing.
